Data Manager Guide

In the SENSE system, setting up a role such as "Data Manager" is based on the following considerations:

  1. In the enterprise, data security is an important issue. Data, as the core asset of an enterprise, should ensure that every access to it is legitimate. Although the SENSE system is read-only for data, especially data from databases, we still understand the enterprise's attitude towards data assets to ensure its lawful access. Data Managers can act as gatekeepers in the SENSE system, connect to internal databases within the enterprise, combine the settings of the database DBAs, and share appropriately within the SENSE system to ensure that data is only accessed, processed, and explored by legitimate users.
  2. As stated in the Overall Product Introduction, the SENSE system does not explicitly distinguish whether a user is from the technical department or the business department. However, from the perspective of the data production process, there is a gap between data assets and business departments in an enterprise: business departments understand the business logic and requirements better, but few people can understand the underlying data storage structure and model. Therefore, those who understand these aspects (usually the technical IT department in an enterprise) organize the stored data into reasonable models for the business department, making it easier for the personnel to understand, process, and explore. Such a role in the SENSE system is the Data Manager.

Data Connection

Data Managers should know the related configuration of databases in the enterprise, such as the host, port, username, password, etc., and import these databases through SENSE system settings, which are called data connections in the SENSE system.

Based on permission and security considerations, Data Managers can negotiate with the database DBAs to use usernames and passwords to restrict the data information that can be seen through this setting.

After completing these settings, Data Managers can share the established data connection information with the Data Analyst role in the system, who will then perform data exploration, create charts, and other operations. By default, sharing is not done to ensure the security of data information.

After creating the data sets, Data Managers can share them with data analysts and manage them together, including data cleaning and preprocessing, etc.

Once all this is done, data chart exploration, the core function of BI, will have a solid foundation, and everything will flow smoothly.

In this chapter, we will introduce in detail the functions of connecting to data sources and establishing and managing data sets; in the next chapter, we can start focusing on the data exploration process.
